Thermochemical conversion infrastructure

Our thermochemical conversion infrastructure supports companies in developing and piloting carbonisation, liquefaction, gasification, and synthesis gas processes. The facilities can be used for researching the utilisation of waste feedstocks and industrial side products, such as forestry and agricultural biomasses, plastic waste, municipal solid waste, and carbon dioxide.

The thermochemical conversion infrastructure housed in the VTT Bioruukki Pilot Centre offers a world-class setting for the experimental development of sustainable transportation fuels, chemicals, chemical plastic recycling, carbonisation, and CO2 utilisation. Our facilities enable you to develop and pilot new technologies and find the right solutions before committing to big investments.

Our key infrastructure:

Pilot platform for gasification process development, testing new feedstocks, and the development of gas cleaning technologies for different gasification applications

  • Lab to pilot scale experimental facilities for fluidised bed gasification (up to 150 kg/h feed)
  • Gasification product gas cleaning and synthesis gas ultra-purification facilities
  • Fischer-Tropsch synthesis from lab to bench scale (from 10 g/day to 10 kg/day production)
  • Catalyst manufacturing and testing facilities
  • Analytical laboratories to support development

Thermal liquefaction test facilities for developing new production processes for liquid fuels and chemicals from biomass or recycled waste plastics

  • Lab to pilot scale experimental facilities for thermal and catalytic pyrolysis
  • Lab to bench scale facilities of hydro-thermal liquefaction (HTL)
  • Pyrolysis oil processing and upgrading facilities
  • Analytical laboratories to support development

Lab to bench scale slow pyrolysis facilities for creating biochars and activated carbons from different biomasses

  • Analytical laboratories to support development

Lab to bench scale facilities for CO2 utilisation

  • CO2 conversion to synthesis gas with reverse water gas shift (rWGS)
  • Fischer-Tropsch synthesis from lab to bench scale (from 10 g/day to 10 kg/day production)
  • Catalyst manufacturing and testing, reactor testing

Supported by cutting-edge tools for techno-economic evaluations and process modelling (CFD, ASPEN)
