Cybersecurity

The cybersecurity landscape changes quickly, and off-the-shelf solutions aren’t always enough. We work with our customers and partners to find new ways to prepare their organisation and their customers for cyber risks. We help businesses improve their cyber preparedness and develop efficient solutions for dealing with cyber risks today and in the quantum era.
Key facts about cybersecurity
VTT brings a strong research knowhow into cybersecurity. We offer tailored solutions, evaluation & advisory as well as cyber preparedness, including quantum-safe cybersecurity.
We do not offer one-size-fits-all solutions. We help businesses incorporate cybersecurity into their planning, implementation, and testing processes.
Our background and multidisciplinary expertise make us equipped to deal with demanding environments and critical industries, including energy, defense, and telecommunications.

At VTT, we see cybersecurity as fundamental for the vital functions of societies and organisations. To create resilient infrastructure, industry, or business, cybersecurity measures must provide intelligent protection against current threats ranging from fraud and espionage to hybrid attacks – while also preparing for the future.
VTT offers a long-term perspective to cyber preparedness, and we specialise in tailored solutions for demanding use-cases. As a partner, VTT is able to provide the combined expertise of a multi-disciplinary team of researchers, and our service offering includes:
- IT and operational network assessment and device testing
- Cyber and information security architectures and design requirements
- Expertise in insider threats and social engineering attacks
- Cybersecurity training exercises
- Platform security (e.g., ARM) based hardware
- Cybersecurity applications enabled by and protecting from advancements in AI and quantum computing
From product testing to critical infrastructure protection
VTT has a solid background in solving cybersecurity challenges in several different industries, such as energy, intelligence , defence, and telecommunications sectors. We find the best solutions from ensuring the security of consumer products to protecting critical infrastructure. VTT has helped customers and partners to protect their systems and in finding new business opportunities in cybersecurity.

Going forward, the importance of space technologies and the space industry is also growing. Combining a broad range of expertise, VTT ensures cyber resilience in both communication and remote sensing solutions.
Ideally, industrial operators can partner up and learn about cybersecurity from each other.
Our research promotes, for example, secure mobile and software platforms, information security measurement and testing, encryption, user authentication, and cyber exercises. We can also develop solutions that satisfy privacy requirements. We produce precommercial versions and provide consultancy.
Cybersecurity programmes and testing environments
We design scalable cyber security development programmes to fend off cybersecurity attacks of near-epidemic proportions. Designing, developing, and testing systems and new products with information security in mind can help to prevent many problems.
Information security breaches and faults in critical systems are a growing problem also in the public sector, such as in hospitals. VTT helps businesses and public sector organisations to improve cyber preparedness and develop efficient solutions for dealing with cyber threats.
VTT’s commercial Cyber War Room security laboratory and our 5G pilot networks and testing environments expedite tangible experiments and provide new information about the performance and security of innovations. These research infrastructures allow us to define cyber security architectures also for dedicated 5G networks like ports or mines.
We participate in both national and international joint projects. We also engage in bilateral commercial product development and innovation cooperation, as many of our partners want to keep their worries and concerns secret.
Cyber security is a critical building block for emerging technologies and enabling the development and roll-out of autonomous vehicles and smart mobility, Industry 4.0 and communication infrastructure in Smart Cities.

Post-quantum cryptography
Companies that handle valuable data need to start preparing for the next generation of cyberthreats arising from quantum computing well before effective quantum computers are up and running. Especially in fields like defence, security, and banking, preparing for quantum-based cyber threats is not a contingency plan, but a crucial requirement and a potential competitive edge.
We guide organisations through the challenges of data protection and post-quantum cryptography. We work with our customers and partners to find the most effective and secure options and to work through analysis and implementation.
Preparing for quantum-based cyber threats is a crucial requirement and a potential competitive edge.
VTT has strong expertise in quantum technologies ranging from quantum devices to algorithm development. At VTT, we understand that modern cyber security also needs quantum-safe methods. We develop new cryptography solutions and participate in the standardisation and implementation of existing methods. VTT also hosts Finland’s first quantum computer, Helmi.
Projects
AI-NET-ANTILLAS project coordination
VTT coordinates the Finnish consortium of the European AI-NET-ANTILLAS project, which develops methods for securing information networks and critical infrastructure.
VTT leads project on Post-Quantum Cryptography
Business Finland funded Post-Quantum Cryptography project researches and develops quantum-secure encryption algorithms and technologies. In addition, the project develops national recommendations for assessing quantum security and examines the effects of quantum computing on society.
