Smart mobility services and automated driving
In the future, mobility of people and goods will be more sustainable, smart and automated. VTT helps companies and societies to develop smart mobility services from automated vehicles to efficient logistics and sustainable transport systems.
We develop mobility services as well as vehicle and transport automation solutions.
Our strengths lie in service impact assessment, safe operation of autonomous systems and situational awareness in challenging conditions.
Our customers include cities, central government agencies and businesses, such as transport service providers, transport and logistics operators and vehicle manufacturers.
he world needs more sustainable, efficient and user-friendly ways to move people and things. Cities and service operators all around the world are looking for ways to reduce transport emissions and improve performance and safety. Data generated by automation and new digital transport systems enables new business opportunities, for example, road and sea transport and mobile machinery. Drone technology also has huge potential.
The market potential for low-carbon propulsion, increasing autonomy and digital services is considerable. The global urban and rural mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) market alone is expected to grow to 900 billion euros by 2030. The autonomous vehicles, heavy machinery and drones market is projected to reach a total value of approximately 70 billion euros by 2023.
Our journey together can be based on whichever perspective is the most important for you:
Impact of business transition across logistics and transport systems
Public authorities and developers of transport or logistics services are more likely to be interested in the automation or digitalisation of logistics and transport systems. We can help you choose the right focus and priorities, and to identify business opportunities.
Full autonomy of vehicles is not always necessary, but experiment driven human-centred design is.
VTT can come up with scenarios to illustrate alternative service and business models. We excel at identifying different ways to solve challenges and at evaluating impact. We carry out impact assessments from social, technological and economic perspectives.
Human-centred and safe operating concepts and service design
Vehicle manufacturers and service providers tend to focus on user experience and are more likely to be interested in the impacts of autonomy and new service models on the safety and user-friendliness of logistics/transport systems.
Our human-centred engineering and service design specialists are masters of safety-critical systems and can help you to design solutions that satisfy the needs of different user groups. Our services also make it easier to demonstrate the regulatory compliance and public acceptability of solutions. Our experience of inclusive Living Lab piloting environments allows us to test the user-experience of services in real-life scenarios.
Situational awareness and automated driving
For many of our customers, developing situational awareness solutions and related services for vehicles or traffic management is the natural path towards interoperable systems and higher levels of autonomy. Examples of customers with these kinds of needs include vehicle manufacturers and logistics and transport operators.
VTT has extensive experience in vehicle and transport infrastructure sensor systems and data fusion to generate an overview of the environment. We have also been working on a control system for autonomous driving different weather conditions. We have access to three specially equipped cars as well as a bus for automated driving research and experiments. Our sensing technology experts can also deliver customised solutions and algorithms. Our ICT experts specialise in solutions that enable vehicle and backend systems to communicate and exchange data.
