How to secure the defence technological and industrial base? The defence issues are involved with anything from underground and underwater to space. This means researching and developing of various next generation solutions to all sectors from civil to security to military and vice versa.
The Finnish Government Resolution (Securing the Finnish Defence Technological and Industrial Base, Ministry of Defence) of the technological and industrial base of our defence focuses on cyber security, space technology, arctic environment, surveillance applications, lifecycle management and sustainability, communication technologies, CBRN protection and synthetic biology.
Cyber security, the need to improve the capabilities to better respond to the rising level of cyber threats is the talk of the town. This means developing trustworthy platforms and services, e.g platform security, remote attestation, security operation centres, information security and risk analyses. Applied cryptography, blockchains or even a dedicated Cyber War Room are tools to be considered as well.
Space technologies e.g. advanced RF components, communication systems and sensor and imaging technologies contribute to the developing of the defence. Solutions such as next generation remote sensing are implemented on military applications.
VTT's arctic and ship technology research provides desired capability for various naval vessel types operating in seas and harsh cold climate environments. VTT’s research covers ship performance in open water and ice, ice-structure interaction, structural integrity, propulsion efficiency, combat surveillance, noise emissions, operation simulations. Hyperspectral imaging is a good example of next generation imaging technologies within the broad range of surveillance applications. The imaging technologies have various applications also on defence & security sectors such as detecting toxic chemicals, analysing biological agents and warning about explosives. Artificial intelligence and Machine Learning applications are developed to obtain meaningful information from multisensory data from various spectral characteristics.
The durability of the vehicles is in focus as well, so lifecycle management with related maintenance-repair-overhaul activities has become an important issue, as well as the next generation communication technologies, such as 5G. CBRN protection with i.e. contamination management is one of the key focus areas of the Finnish Defence Forces.
