Artificial intelligence doesn’t mean machines will take over. It means a lot of opportunities – also in design and engineering.

What if we could teach the rules of product development to a computer? What if we could tell the design system what we are looking for, what it should look like and how it should feel, and then let the computer do the hard work for us?

Our approach

Finland will become the leading country in AI-assisted engineering design and smart design methods in Europe by 2025.

VTT will enable companies to connect artificial intelligence technologies with industry needs by developing AI-assisted design methods and tools.

These are the cornerstones of our approach: 

Producing more data with simulation is becoming trivial. The real question is what we can learn from the data.

The scope is in the process: how designing and engineering is done and especially how it can be improved.

The need to increase automation in the design process and to create cognitive design and engineering tools, especially for the design and engineering of large complex solutions.

The ultimate goal: an automated design process, in which intelligent design systems can design and engineer optimised solutions for given targets.
