VTT is among the most active European research institutes participating in the European Union research programmes and is Finland's largest single recipient of EU R&D funding. Collaborative European programmes such as Horizon Europe, Euratom, European Defence Fund and Digital Europe form the cornerstone of VTT’s international research initiatives.

In these competitive research and innovation projects, VTT develops solutions with other key players around the world and plays a crucial role in integrating other Finnish organizations into EU R&D programmes. Finnish companies are involved in over 2/3 of VTT-coordinated projects, and close to 50% of all partners in VTT EU projects are from the industry.

Key facts

VTT’s EU activities are vital to enable VTT’s operations and the development of excellent research, but also to establish networks and connections with strategic European partners, to facilitate collaboration with best players in the EU and global R&I landscape and to promote society sustainability and well-being in Finland and beyond.

VTT is an acknowledged and active partner within numerous European research and innovation communities, maintaining strategic cooperation agreements with prestigious universities, research institutes, and companies. VTT's public mandate and extensive technology portfolio underpin this involvement. For example, VTT holds membership roles in steering groups like the Industrial Forum, Circular Economy Financing, Interregional Innovation Investments, and serves on the Gaia-X board.

Our experts participate extensively in numerous European networks and partnerships building the common vision with key sectorial European innovation ecosystems. These include, for example, Horizon Europe partnerships and innovation communities, European industrial technology platforms, EC expert groups and several other innovation communities.
