Nokia Foundation has granted its 2020 Recognition Award to Mikko Möttönen, D.Sc. (Tech), Professor of Quantum Technology at Aalto University and VTT, for his contributions to quantum computing research. The Foundation annually recognizes groundbreaking and longstanding research in fundamental physics.

Timo Ali-Vehmas, Chairman of the Board of Nokia Foundation, mentioned that the decision to recognise as the 2020 recipient Möttönen factored in the importance of this long-standing work, including the recent achievements and particularly the steps taken towards the commercialization of scientific results

“It has been great to see how quantum mechanics, which was generally considered as strange and rare, has over the years become a common tool that is being harnessed for industrial use around the world. I can’t wait to see what it turns out to be, especially in Finland, where, over the decades, we have been able to develop a unique ecosystem,” said Mikko Möttönen.

Nokia Foundation promotes and supports Finnish scientific development and education in the fields of information technology, telecommunications and related scientific disciplines.
