Cybersecurity for autonomous vehicle systems

Project news

Systems like autonomous vehicles with wireless interfaces, machine learning, multiple actors or subsystems pose potential cybersecurity threats - VTT's Cyber4AVS project develops solutions to improve cybersecurity of autonomous vehicle systems.

Growing attack surface of autonomous vehicle systems

Sharing information in complex environments, wireless interfaces, software upgrades, machine learning, artificial intelligence, remote controls have a growing potential to be easily attacked by hostile actors. Disturbances in safety-critical vehicle systems and functions, such as the engine, brakes, steering and communication, can lead in a worst case to loss of control of the vehicle. Safety-critical applications, systems and services require standardized and certified products, systems and practices. This is also stated in the directives and regulations of the European Union. For example, automotive directives and regulations impose requirements for third-party approval.

Cybersecurity assurance in accordance with significant international standards

VTT develops cybersecurity assurance solutions, which can support industry and society in the cybersecurity certification of various networked devices and systems. Certification of products is an essential part of value chains by bringing a common language between different players or stakeholders and enhancing development practices. The aim of the Cyber4AVS project is to develop solutions especially for cybersecurity assurance of autonomous vehicle systems and thus contribute to the integration of secure digitalisation into society.

Cyber4AVS project is funded from European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) by Council of Oulu Region as a part of the European Union’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project has close co-operation with Häme University of Applies Sciences and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences.

Our vision beyond 2030

A safe society is a wonderful thing. It should be treasured and strengthened so that known and unknown threats both in the real and virtual worlds do not jeopardise it.
