Our strategy: Chain reaction for growth
VTT’s strategy is to start and sustain chain reactions of positive impact. When research becomes commercial innovation, Finnish companies grow – and when Finnish companies grow, Finland grows.
We create technology that turns into new products, solutions, startups and even entire industries. Commercialisation is a way to ensure that research creates real value. Our work responds to the major challenges of our time, and we work closely with our customers to develop solutions that matter.
Our strategy is to create impact based on these three pillars:
Startups create new international business through innovation, which is why they are at the heart of VTT’s strategy. We provide them with expertise, infrastructure, IP and development environments on which internationally competitive top-tier companies can be built.
But growth does not come only from new companies. It also comes from the renewal of established businesses. VTT helps companies open new directions for growth, accelerate product development and take technologies from research towards use. As competition intensifies, slowness becomes costly. We shorten the journey from idea to pilot, from pilot to production, and from technology to a solution customers can buy.
Through innovation, VTT strengthens Finland’s resilience. Its role in defence and dual-use technologies is growing, and VTT’s research also plays a key role in other areas of resilience, such as the development of energy systems.
All this creates a chain reaction of growth: research becomes technology, technology becomes business, and business becomes jobs, exports and competitiveness.
VTT’s impact also travels through people. Our experts carry deep technological knowledge into Finnish companies and help turn research into growth. We strengthen not only companies and technologies, but the talent base of the entire Finnish economy.
As new industries emerge and traditional industry renews itself, the impact reaches beyond individual companies. It strengthens Finland’s economy, security, security of supply and wellbeing.

VTT’s value is not only in what we research. It is in what our research makes happen. To drive growth, VTT will place a strong emphasis on the commercialisation of research and on accelerating that process. By 2030, VTT’s goal is to double both its commercial revenue and the number of startups emerging from VTT. The objective is clear: to develop technology that goes beyond the obvious and creates impact.
