For decades, the drying section has been the most energy-intensive stage in paper, board, and nonwoven production. Traditional air-based drying methods consume enormous amounts of energy, representing up to 70% of total energy use in these processes. Today, this paradigm is about to change.
SteamDry, an EU Horizon Europe-funded project led by VTT, introduces Superheated Steam Drying (SSD) technology, a breakthrough that promises energy savings of 60% or more in the drying section, and up to 40% across the entire production line, while enabling CO₂-emission-free operation.
Why does this matter?
Superheated Steam Drying technology recovers nearly all latent heat, something impossible with conventional air drying.
“This innovation not only reduces operational costs but also supports sustainability goals, helping manufacturers meet stringent climate targets and improve competitiveness,” says Juha Maijala, Manager, Technology Concept at VTT.
The long-term potential of this technology is huge:
- 127 TWh annual energy savings in Europe (≈ €6 billion)
- 870 TWh globally, nearly seven times Europe’s potential
How SteamDry works
SteamDry replaces hot air with superheated steam in a closed-loop system, eliminating air resistance and enabling faster, more efficient heat transfer. The process is supported by advanced digitalisation - digital twins, AI-based control systems, and real-time monitoring - ensuring optimal performance and safety.
“The technology is versatile: it can be retrofitted to existing machines or integrated into new installations with low CAPEX and OPEX, making it accessible for a wide range of applications, including textile and recycling industries,” Maijala highlights.
Why engage now
Energy efficiency is no longer optional; it is a competitive necessity. By adopting SteamDry, companies can:
- Slash energy costs and carbon footprint
- Enhance product quality and process reliability
- Position themselves as sustainability leaders in global markets
