We offer expertise, services and IPR in hydrometallurgy, biohydrometallurgy and leaching.

Low concentration or complex matrices present a business opportunity for valuables recovery, but they may also require a different and often unconventional approach. We provide our clients with out-of-the box thinking and hands-on expertise for tailored solutions.

Hands-on experience based on solid know-how

Our experts have years of industrial and academic experience in metals processing technologies and the selective recovery of metals. We perform separation of toxic and harmful substances from material streams into a more stable form. Our batch tests and pilot capabilities for re-designs and new concepts bring additional value to our clients.

Our competence covers hydrometallurgical and biohydrometallurgical technologies for metals. We work with precious and critical metals leaching and recovery from different material feeds. We study primary and secondary feed materials including metal containing wastes and side streams for more selective recovery of metals. 

State-of-the-art capabilities

Our new hydrometallurgical processing equipment consists of novel titanium reactors for leaching and precipitation including cementation stage, and continuous solvent extraction mixer-settler equipment. In addition, we have bioreactors of different sizes.

The Flexmet mobile pilot system can be used for both batch trials and continuous bench-piloting on a 1-5 L/h throughput scale. 

The experimental work is supported by in-house thermochemical modelling tools and customized flowsheet models for the client.

The main customer focus sectors are the mining and metals processing industry, and recycling companies.

VTT is actively participating in raw materials processing developments, in green mining concepts development and in EU activities related to hydrometallurgy. We are involved in the critical metals and REE affairs on EU advisory bodies on the European Innovation Platform on Raw materials (EIP RM) and participate in the European Rare Earth Competence Network (ERECON).

Metals separation processes are also utlilized in metals and chemicals processing and in materials recycling. With batch experiments and Flexmet piloting we can validate new concepts for multiple applications. The process concept development is supported by our environmental performance and economical feasibility assessment services.
