Expertise from raw materials to high-value end-products

VTT works with many different biomaterials in processing them into intermediates for food, feed, and material products.

In addition to wood and annual plants, also various industrial side-streams, like berrycakes, brewery mash, bones and feathers, can be processed into more suitable forms for industrial uses.

One of our important research fields is the refining of food industriy side streams to improve their nutritional or technological properties, such as treating feather-biomass for fodder. We also develop enzymatic biomass treatments in higher-than-conventional consistencies, and work with functionalization of lignocellulosic materials.

Versatile biomass processing in high consistency

VTT has the expertise and the grinders, high-consistency reactors and extruders for processing almost any bio-based raw material. We have a food-grade material processing environment, we can operate in aseptic conditions, or we may co-process the material even with strong chemicals, depending on its intended end-use. 

Food, feed and the other bioeconomy sectors benefit from the versatile research infrastructure, extensive analytical services and wide competence when developing more effective or totally new process concepts. Our approaches can be applied to chemical and mechanical biomass deconstruction, modification and functionalization of biomaterials, and for enzymatic hydrolysis and microbe fermentation.

High consistency processing also brings opportunities to the modification of material properties with respect to end-product requirements and intensifying the extraction or hydrolysis processes.
