Embedded intelligence in machinery

Customer: Metso Automation Plc

Today commercially available Acoustic Emission (AE) sensors are based on piezo crystal technology and have known problems including high price. There are no foreseen developments either in price or performance of piezo based AE sensors.

VTT has developed a Micro Electro Mechanical (MEMS) AE sensor. The main advantages are affordable price, small size and low current consumption, which makes it ideal for wireless sensor nodes. AE has wide application range in condition monitoring of bearings, leakages in valves and pipelines, oil insulated electric transformer partial discharge detection, fracture formation in supportive structures, etc.

Metso Automation applies the AE sensor for auto diagnostic features in products and R&D.

VTT's energy efficient and low cost AE sensor could enable us to integrate valve leakage measurement within process valve packages. Valve tightness is crucial in any processes and to be able to predict valve condition is very important.
