Critical Technologies Towards 5G

The purpose of the programme is to develop solutions that will enable an increase in telecommunications volume by a factor of 1 000 over the next ten years

This is a major challenge because of increasing energy consumption and the finite nature of the frequency spectrum. Moreover, society is becoming increasingly dependent on wireless mobile communications systems.

Example top achievements in the programme are as follows:

Employing research results and obtained know-how for societal and industrial benefits is important for VTT. Good examples of this kind of commercial activities are (1) European Space Agency (ESA) project, and (2) network solutions to harbour environments below:

  1. Frequency sharing techniques with other networks or radio services
  2. Testing and developing advanced wireless mesh network for PSA, world's largest transshipment hub

EU research project examples participated by VTT on 5G technologies (FP7 and Horizon 2020):

National and European Celtic-Plus research project examples partially funded by Tekes:

  • 5G test network (2015-2016),
  • See for many test bed projects of which results are integrated by the 5G Test Network Finland action.
  • Consumption optimization in video networks (2014-2017);
  • SDN Concept in Generalized Mobile Network Architectures (6/2013-4/2016);

  • Optimising Power Efficiency in Mobile Radio Networks-2 (2011-2015)
