Large-area plastic sensors – mass manufacturing of SERS substrates

Recent advances in printing technologies enable the fabrication of large-area optical sensor platforms on plastics. Highprecision nanostructuring offers huge potential for Raman measurement applications where sensing capabilities can be greatly expanded by utilising signal enhancing surfaces.

Conventional analytical sensing methods are typically expensive both in terms of personnel and equipment. Other key limitations of current sensors include limited sensitivity and inherent single-parameter measurement capability. Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) is a rapid label-free detection mechanism popularly used in chemical analysis and diagnostic applications due to its high sensitivity and spatial resolution. To expand the application range of SERS substrates, the challenges of achieving low-cost, highthroughput large-area manufacturing need to be met. One solution is to use plastic foils with a printed nanostructure.

VTT develops SERS sensors and state-of-art read-out units

VTT has an extensive R&D offering in the field of sensor technologies. Besides development of SERS sensors, VTT is intensively developing state-of-art read-out units for multi-analyte detection in operational sensor systems. Through long-term collaboration with industry and other research institutes VTT can also help bring together needed partners to complete the value chain. The technology offering covers photonics, sample handling, electronics, antibody chemistry and engineering, low-cost polymer fabrication techniques and heterogeneous integration.
