Battery testing facilities

 

​​Our new facilities for battery technology R&D have been built during 2012-2013.

Testing capabilities range from single cell tests to modules and full-sized battery systems in different environment and loading conditions.

The AVL 320 kW battery tester & emulator is serving both the battery testing labs , but duplicates as a battery simulator and high-power electric energy supply for the adjacent vehicle facility.

Full characterisation of different state-of-the-art Li-ion battery cells (0 – 6 V)

  • Different chemistries and manufacturers on the market
  • Benchmarking, verification, comparisons


Multi-channel programmable battery testers up to high power cells (high power applications)

  • Tests according to standards (e.g ISO)
  • Tests with customer-specified load cycles
  • Rapid characterisation and lifetime tests, e.g. cyclic lifetime


Controlled test conditions

  • Climate chambers for battery cells
  • Impedance spectroscopy for electrochemical evaluation of batteries (Gamry equipment)
  • Equipment: PEC SBT0550 (24 channels á 50 A)

Battery pack testing

  • Different manufacturers on the market, customer contract testing
  • Benchmarking, verification, comparisons


Programmable high power battery tester (up to 320 kW)

  • Tests according to standards (e.g ISO)
  • Tests with customer-specified load cycles
  • Battery management systems, thermal management concept
  • Verification of the battery pack, including modelling


Controlled test conditions

  • Climate container for large application-ready battery packs
  • Mechanical tests, shock and vibration
