Platform and specialty chemicals

Drop-in substitute fuels and chemicals can replace what you and your customer use now with no need to adjust existing processes. VTT's bio-based, platform chemicals represent a low investment barrier, since we have done much of the work already. ​Bio-based polymers deliver real, long-lasting advantages over traditional polymers. VTT develops advanced bio-based monomers—the building blocks of our high performance polymers. VTT develops new polymers and novel production methods for clients who want to increase competitiveness and capitalise on new business opportunities.
 

Diacids

VTT has developed enabling processes leveraging the conversion of naturally occurring polysaccharides to aldaric acids (e.g. mucic and glucaric acids) and conversion of these into platform chemicals and novel materials.

Our core competence is in developing processes from the idea phase to laboratory and pilot-scale utilising our batch and continuous reactors and various analytical methods.

Our core competence is the development of extraction processes to isolate valuable extractives and fatty acids from renewable sources and further upgrade these compounds to valuable fine and specialty chemicals.

​​​Bio-aromatics

VTT develops bio-aromatic chemicals as a replacement for the fossil-based crude oil for use in a range of applications: Bio-fuels (gasification or pyrolysis with the use of catalysis) and Bio-BTX (benzene, toluene, xylene).

​​​Affordable sugars from lignocellulosic biomass

VTT develops industrial concepts for the deconstruction of renewable biomasses by applying sustainable biotechnical methods, often combined with chemical or mechanical processing.

​Extracting value from lignin

VTT turns lignin into performance polymers. It is typically used as an alternative to several polyaromates in thermoplastic composites, coatings and adhesives.

​​​Carbonised speciality products

VTT develops products based on hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC). VTT focus areas are: development of valuable solid and liquid products and development of more efficient processes.

Glues and adhesives

VTT is developing bio-based adhesives: formulations based on lignin, polysaccharide glues and hot-melts based on grafted celluloses.

​​​Thermoplastic lignin

​Our focus areas are: plasticisation of lignin using chemical modifications and external plasticisers, polymer blends, fibre reinforced composites, odour of lignin.

​​​​​​Lignin dispersion and colloids​

VTT has developed new lignin dispersions and colloids which are useful in material applications such as: coating paper and board with lignin dispersions and polyelectrolytes for dispersing different systems such as concrete.

Lignin separation and characterisation

We characterise lignin structure and its material properties, e.g. lignin functionalities, detailed chemical substructures and inter-unit linkages, substitution patterns of aromatic subunits, molar mass distributions, and thermal properties.
