3D printing roadmap
VTT helped Valmet workshop on how to utilize 3d printing technology and how to scale-up existing metal printing capabilities to truly support business in the long run.
Power-to-Gas Optimization
VTT has developed a software platform that enables dynamic gas production and utilizes energy market instruments in order to produce gas at an affordable price.
Optimization of wood transportation
VTT has designed and implemented multiple optimization models to aid the transport planning process at Stora Enso Wood Supply Finland. The models include special features for wood transportation, such as constraints on different wood assortments.
Cost competitive process for metals recovery
VTT and Ekokem Co. worked together to create a selective, safe and cost competitive process for metals recovery based on laboratory experiments and techno-economical evaluation.
KOPTI energy management tool
VTT developed an optimisation tool tailored in cooperation with HELEN in order to provide a solution for short term operation of power and heat plants such as CHP units, energy storages, solar thermal and heat pumps.
Procedures for pre-commissioning pipeline
VTT and Nord Stream worked together to solve the challenge of ecological compatibility of methods and corrosion caused by microbiological activity to pipeline materials due to natural seawater used as pre-commissioning water.
Managing and controlling biocorrosion
VTT, Outokumpu, Nord Stream, TVO and Fortum worked together to lower costs, increase lifetime of equipment and materials and boost efficiency of systems through biocorrosion control and management.
New process control unit verification
Focalspec has developed a new type of on-line topography measurement system for the monitoring and control of printed electronics production.
The system is based on novel Lateral Chromatic Imaging technology.
Economical serial production
Economical serial production for complicated, high-strength component for demanding corrosion and wear environment.
Evaluation of thruster vibration with virtual modelling
VTT and ABB developed FE-models which took into account the most significant factors and phenomena affecting on the vibration behaviour of the Azipod thruster in real operation conditions. The results were verified by full-scale experiments.
New propeller design
VTT has developed new features in propeller design software for Tevo Oy and built the capability to design and optimize bronze propellers for ice class applications.
Eliminating design errors
VTT's virtual engineering laboratory offers top-level facilities for the design of work tasks, cabin layout, field of view and positioning of equipment – allowing also participation of key persons of the company and incorporating relevant expertise before building prototypes.
Embedded intelligence in machinery
VTT has developed a Micro Electro Mechanical (MEMS) AE sensor. The main advantages are affordable price, small size and low current consumption, which makes it ideal for wireless sensor nodes.
Coating solutions for waste and biomass boilers
Difficult fuels cause demanding corrosion conditions in waste and biomass fired boilers, which leads to corrosion damage and expensive replacements. On-site experiments have demonstrated that coatings promise to significantly improve the life of boiler tubes under corrosive/erosive service.
Strategic Energy System Analysis
VTT implemented a detailed multi-region energy system model which is specifically designed to support strategic long-term decision-making related to new energy system investments, assessments of the role of new technologies and their environmental impacts, and policy analysis.
Energy system planning and electricity market simulation
VTT helped improve understanding of the value and impact of power system flexibility in the future, investments in generation, storage, transmission and demand side flexibility as well as energy and electricity market designs
and laws and regulations.
Continuous improvement of production process with virtual rolling quality system
VTT and Rautaruukki have created a virtual quality system to monitor and analyse the production process. The system uses virtual sensors and models to calculate quality features based on process information and analysed history data. The intelligent virtual-sensor technology is developed for estimating hard-to-measure variables. Automation system is continuously updated after analysis to achieve the required quality.
